At first light, The Crew assembled before Qadi Sarek Al-Ghurab in the High Citadel of Al-Zellah. Sarek directs the party to secretly infiltrate the estate of a rival merchant-prince, Emir Tariq al-Basra, who has been hoarding untaxed elemental salt, water-gems, and an ancient Tuataran stone cylinder in a subterranean vault. Sarek explicitly reminds Amina that her father’s continued survival in his dungeons depends entirely on her complete cooperation and the mission’s success.
The party stakes out Tariq’s estate and times their breach for 14:00, coinciding with Myrkvi—the two-hour daily eclipse when EyeQweetas obscures Freehet. Using the cover of darkness, Wendle scales the perimeter wall and drops a climbing rope. Kaelen uses minor cantrips to create distracting noises in the outer courtyard. Jafar uses his thieves’ tools to successfully pick the lock securing the outer vault door.
Inside the basement vault, the party locates the Tuataran cylinder and crates of water-gems, but they disturb a Sand-Ghul (an elemental undead bound to guard the hoard). During the encounter, Zahra holds the front line, using her swordwork and natural Yuan-ti Malison resilience to absorb the Ghul’s attacks. Kaelen strikes the creature with wild, surging innate sorcery. Wendle fires Eldritch Blasts from the doorway, but an erratic shot strikes a hanging sack of dried chili peppers, filling the subterranean vault with burning, spicy smoke. Finding herself right in the thick of things, Amina uses Warding Flare to impose disadvantage on the Ghul’s claw attacks, following up with a Guiding Bolt that illuminates the creature in golden radiance, allowing Zahra to deliver the finishing blow with a decisive strike.
While securing the loot, Amina discovers six young human and halfling orphans locked in an iron cage behind the vault. They were being forced to refine toxic elemental salt. Moved by their plight and mindful of her own captive father, Amina insists on releasing them. Jafar initially argues against the delay, but Zahra points out that taking the slaves damages Tariq’s economic infrastructure. Jafar agrees and picks the cage lock, while Kaelen and Wendle intentionally set fire to the rest of the chili crates to smoke out the upper floor and cover the escape.
The party leads the children out during the final minutes of the eclipse and delivers them to a sympathetic halfling trade caravan, paying them to take the children—using what are (probably) traceable silver ingots stolen from Tariq’s desk.
At second morning, the party returns to the High Citadel and delivers the Tuataran cylinder and water-gems to Qadi Sarek. Sarek accepts the delivery greedily and pays the crew their contracted fee. Following the mission, the party spends the remainder of the evening at a shaded tea house in the Eastern District. Jafar calculates the net profit, dividing the coin while setting aside a small company fund for supplies and mutually-owned investments. Having survived their first high-stakes contract together, the party members spend the next two days in quiet study, weapon drills, and meditation around Al-Zellah to refine their skills. Next session they will start as 2nd-level characters while Amina will be 3rd.
At first light, Qadi Sarek Al-Ghurab summons The Crew to his private chambers in the High Citadel. He tasks them with infiltrating the manor of a rival collector, Master El-Hashem, to steal a rare, velvet-bound tome titled The Fable of the Red Shawl. Sarek explicitly warns them that the tome is bound with volatile extra-planar magic and strictly commands them not to open it.
The Crew executes another Eclipse Period breach, this time of El-Hashem’s estate. Jafar uses his Cunning Action to dash quietly past the corridor sentries and pick the intricate lock on the study display case. While later securing the precious tome, Wendle—driven by his obsession with arcane lore—notices silver-inscribed script on the binding and “accidentally” unclasps the latch. The tome bursts open, unleashing a vortex of pale mist that physically pulls all five members of The Crew into its pages.
The Crew awakens inside a pocket demiplane resembling a dark, suffocating pine forest that envelops a decaying timber cottage. Upon entering the cottage, they are ambushed by a trio of bipedal wolf-humanoids wearing blood-stained nightgowns, lace bonnets, and knitted shawls, all speaking in a chorus of raspy voices claiming to be their “Grandma,” “Auntie,” and “Wet Nurse.”
The Crew quickly discovers that the mystic power of the fable’s internal narrative rules render the wolf-humanoids completely immune to non-silver mundane weapons, while also dampening standard offensive cantrips. Lacking silver weapons or higher-tier magical arms, The Crew is forced to flee into the dense woods. Zahra uses her battle instincts to command a defensive retreat, while Jafar uses Cunning Action to Disengage from melee and scout a path through the mist.
Following animal tracks, The Crew breaks into a ruined huntsman’s cabin deeper in the forest. Inside, they discover a rack of silver-plated woodman’s axes, silver skinning shears, and silver-tipped crossbow bolts. Conveniently equipped now with silver weaponry, The Crew returns to the narrow river crossing where they managed to lose the pursuing wolves earlier. The wolves were still nearby and were surprised when they prey returned to attack them. Zahra sprang immediately into an Action Surge to execute a rapid sequence of strikes with a heavy silver axe, cleaving Grandma nearly in two.
Kaelen unleashed a point-blank Thunderwave, blasting Auntie and the Wet Nurse into the river. Wendle used his new-found Charisma-fueled Agonizing Blast invocation to hurl eldritch force strikes into the wet wolves. Finally, Amina channeled her divine power “Radiance of the Dawn” to sear the creatures with radiant energy, burning away their disguises and what little life remained in their lupine bones.
Upon defeating Grandma, the pack leader, with a fatal backstab, Jafar retrieved a glowing silver bookmark key embedded between the creature’s chest. Inserting the bookmark key into the trunk of an ancient elder-tree in the center of the forest opened an archway of white light, returning The Crew to El-Hashem’s study in Al-Zellah.
The Crew then escaped from bewildered, no-longer actively-searching house guards, and they delivered The Fable of the Red Shawl to Qadi Sarek just before first night. Sarek accepted the tome with cold satisfaction, seemingly aware that the book had been recently opened. But he said nothing. The session concluded with The Crew returning to their quarters to clean their newly-acquired silvered weapons.
Next Session, everyone in the party will join Amina as 3rd-level characters.
At first light, The Crew completes several days of intensive training and field practice around Al-Zellah, advancing to 3rd level and unlocking their core class specializations. Jafar officially steps into the Arcane Trickster archetype, mastering illusion magic and Mage Hand Legerdemain. Zahra selects the Battle Master martial archetype, refining her tactical command with superiority dice for maneuvers like Precision Attack and Trip Attack. Wendle seals his Pact of the Tome with his patron, the Dark Archfey Mýrkynna (The Bog Mother), receiving his Book of Shadows and immediately taking the Book of Ancient Secrets invocation so he can begin transcribing rituals from every tradition into his personal grimoire. Kaelen unlocks Metamagic, choosing Distance Spell and Quicken Spell to alter his innate sorcery spells.
Following their training, The Crew is tasked by Qadi Sarek Al-Ghurab with a surveillance contract: infiltrate the canal docks of Al-Zellah to secure shipping manifests and arrival schedules for his rivals operating along the shores of the Wimrande.
Upon reaching the waterfront at Kennith, The Crew leverages their diverse background experience to gather intelligence without drawing unwanted attention: Wendle draws on his Sailor background to evaluate tide tables, inspect vessel identification, and blend seamlessly into the dockhand chatter.
Jafar uses his Charlatan training and disguises along the wharf to press local black-market buyers for shipment lead times. Kaelen applies his Sage background to decipher encrypted customs ciphers stamped on warehoused spice crates. Zahra uses her Folk Hero reputation among waterfront brawlers to keep local gang thugs from interfering with their work. Amina relies on her Acolyte background to inspect dockside votive shrines and question those who routinely try to bring religion to wayward sailors. Thus, collectively, The Crew gets a pretty good idea of when shipments have historically arrived in the Silt-Harbor port.
While Jafar sneaks into a locked harbor warehouse office and uses Mage Hand Legerdemain to silently lift and copy a master ledger, a major complication occurs outside. Torvin, an idealistic light alf from Amina’s home island of Strendlin, recognizes Amina among the crowd. Assuming she is a captive being held by the dangerous mercenaries with her, Torvin draws his sword and loudly attacks Zahra to “rescue” Amina, completely oblivious to Amina’s urgent signals to stand down.
The disruption alerts the Al-Zellah City Guard. Despite serving the ruthless Western Qadimate, the Guard operates with strict, lawful efficiency to enforce trade regulations and maintain order along the piers. Refusing to permit public violence, an armored squad of guards moves in with halberds to arrest everyone involved.
The Crew, who have no real business being there, attempts a quick, non-lethal disengage to preserve their cover. Jafar casts Silent Image to drop a false cloud of fog across a section of the pier, while Zahra commands a structured retreat toward the canal grates. Kaelen casts Mind Spike on an advancing guard sergeant before fading into the warehouse shadows. Torvin escalates the confrontation, attacking the Guard Captain directly under the impression that he must be one of the kidnapping rogues. As two guards corner the overwhelmed young light alf paladin, Amina attempts to intervene and save his life. She casts Spiritual Weapon to interpose a glowing spectral weapon between Torvin and his attackers. The sudden burst of radiant light startles Torvin, causing him to stumble backward over a cargo crate directly into an incoming halberd thrust, resulting in a fatal chest wound.
With Torvin dead and the harbor alarms sounding, Zahra executes a Battle Master Trip Attack to sweep the legs of the lead guards, allowing Amina and The Crew to slip into the canal sewer grates with the duplicated ledgers.
The Crew delivers the complete shipment schedules to others working here remotely for Qadi Sarek. The Crew then returns home for their contract payment. The session concludes with four of The Crew washing off the harbor stink at a district bathhouse. Amina is left alone, quietly burdened with guilt over Torvin’s tragic intervention, but she achieves 4th level.
At first light the following week, Qadi Sarek Al-Ghurab summons The Crew to the lower galleries of the High Citadel. Sarek’s overseers report a sudden block in Subterranean Cistern 4, one of the key obsidian reservoirs supplying Al-Zellah’s central fountains. Sarek tasks The Crew with entering the flooded, ancient Tuataran tunnels below the city, clearing the blockage, and eliminating whatever occupies or is deliberately blocking the vault.
The Crew descends into the subterranean gloom, navigating slippery stone catwalks and ancient sluice gates. Deep within the upper conduit, they encounter Rafi “the Spell-Blade” Al-Fasir, an independent human fighter (Eldritch Knight) with a Soldier background exploring the cisterns on a rumor regarding ancient Tuataran power cores and the un-welcomed presence of modrons. Recognizing that no one there wanted a profitless fight in the damp darkness, Jafar negotiates a tentative, one-mission alliance to split any scavenged salvage and clear the vault together.
Reaching the central reservoir, they discover a rogue Tuataran clockwork guardian, dormant for centuries, was reactivated. It sealed the main overflow valves for whatever reason. It was now surrounded by a swarm of angry, nesting silt-mephits. Jafar used Cunning Action to dart along the narrow ledge, disarming a series of ancient pressure-plate dart traps securing the vault controls. Zahra and Rafi formed a formidable dual-frontline: Zahra used her Battle Master Precision Attack to strike the guardian’s brass joints, while Rafi activated Shield to absorb the construct’s heavy stone-fist slams and retaliated with arc-infused steel. Kaelen used Distance Spell to hurl sorcerous bolts from way across the flooded chamber, shattering two silt-mephits in mid-air. Wendle blasted the guardian with Agonizing Blast, using force strikes to crack its central core. A couple of monodrone modrons where then discovered and dispatched after a terrific battle where Zahra appeared suddenly ill. Amina used a 2nd-level slotted Restoration to cure Zahra of a blinding silt-fever she must have contracted from the biting mephits.
With the guardian, modrons, and mephits destroyed, Jafar, Wendle, and Rafi manually crank open the sluice gates, restoring the water flow to the upper city. The Crew returns to the High Citadel and reports to Qadi Sarek. Satisfied, Sarek pays their contract fee, while Rafi took his fair share of the scavenged Tuataran brass gears and modron platinum wiring. He parted ways with The Crew on good terms, returning to the Bazaar District to look for his next big contract.
Three days later, at first light, Qadi Sarek orders The Crew outside the basalt walls of Al-Zellah to secure a high-value merchant convoy traveling along the desert road from Maghrib. The caravan carries rare alchemy dyes, Tuataran artifacts, and refined spices intended for Sarek’s trade houses. Sarek warns them that rival desert nomads and scavengers have been raiding the canyon passes during Myrkvi.
The Crew met the convoy at the mouth of the Red Dune Pass as the two-hour daily eclipse begins at 14:00. Under the cover of total darkness, a band of desert nomads accompanied by trained hunting hyenas ambushed the lead wagons. Jafar used a cantrip-started camp fire and a Silent Image of an ogre to trick the main bandit force into splitting their forces hoping to avoid the unexpected guard. Zahra then locked down a narrow canyon choke point, using Trip Attack to sweep a mounted bandit leader from his saddle and kept the rest from reaching the supply wagons. Kaelen tapped into Metamagic (Quicken Spell) to fire a swift offensive spell at the archers perched on the canyon ridges, following up with a Create Bonfire cantrip to ignite the attackers’ wooden war wagon.
Wendle used his Agonizing Blast invocation to knock back the lead hyenas, protecting the panicked wagon drivers. Amina channeled her Radiance of the Dawn, illuminating the dark canyon in golden sunlight. The radiant flash surprised the eclipse-adapted bandits and burned away the shadows, forcing the survivors to flee into the dunes.
The Crew tracked down and slaughter more than a few of the bandits. After that, they successfully escorted the mostly-undamaged convoy into Al-Zellah by 20:00, delivering the cargo directly to Sarek’s warehouses. Sarek paid them a generous bonus for preserving the delicate trade goods. Following the mission, The Crew spent several days in Al-Zellah resting, training, and trying to increase their earnings by gambling in teh local casinos. The Crew (Jafar, Zahra, Wendle, and Kaelen) advanced to 4th Level, unlocking their first Ability Score Improvements. Amina advanced to 5th Level, unlocking a 3rd-level divine spell slot.
Shortly after first light aftera seasonal celebration, The Crew learned through Jafar’s underworld connections of an unsanctioned gem caravan entering Al-Zellah carrying a small supply (1,000 gp worth) of diamonds. Eager to earn some extra cash in order to purchase equipment upgrades in the Bazaar District, The Crew executed an independent heist on the outskirts of the Edge District without seeking authorization from Qadi Sarek Al-Ghurab.
After easily securing the 1,000 gp in diamonds, the party retreated to a safehouse to divide the spoils. There, Amina argued that the others should divide 700 gp worth of diamonds among the four of them; she would forsake her share if she could instead hold onto 300 gp worth of the gems so that she might cast Revivify if ever the need arises. Reluctantly, the group yielded, each taking 175 gp each, although it was apparent most of them resented not getting that extra 25 gp. Contented, Amina tucked her pouch of diamonds into her medicine satchel and prepared her new spell during a Long Rest.
The next morning, as The Crew navigated the narrow alleyways of the Bazaar District toward the armory stalls, they were ambushed by an exceptionally disciplined, heavily armored mercenary strike team. The ambushers deployed heavy pavise shields, severing The Crew's “softer” back rank members from Zahra and Amina’s more-armored reach. Kaelen was struck by two vials of thrown alchemist’s fire. And, instead of using his action to douse the flames, he instead used his Quicken Spell (hoping to quickly finish off the attackers) by firing off multiple fire-damaging spells. But suddenly, two hidden crossbow snipers on the surrounding rooftops concentrated their fire exclusively on the unarmored, flaming (and flame-dealing) sorcerer, dropping him with force-enhanced bolts. Amina scrambled around the shields and through two other attackers, taking heavy damage herself in order to reach Kaelen’s side. He had already failed his last Death Save. Without regard to her own safety, the cleric immediately began chanting the divine incantation for Revivify. But as she reached into her satchel for the diamond spell component, she found her pouch completely empty. Lacking the required divine offering, her spell fizzled in her hands. Kaelen then was truly dead.
The remaining four members of The Crew were quickly overwhelmed and knocked unconscious.
They awoke bound and gagged and found that they had been deposited at the sandaled feet of Qadi Sarek Al-Ghurab in the High Citadel. Sarek revealed then that their ambushers were Crew Prime, a senior mercenary unit operating under his direct contract. Sarek had originally assigned them the diamond caravan job as he was more interested in tracing back the courier to the main supplier than a simple diamond snatch. Unknowingly, The Crew had struck before his own chosen team. And although Jafar had done a great job covering their tracks as they then escaped to the safehouse, Prime’s expert ranger managed to track them down. However, Prime were still unaware that The Crew normally also worked for Sarek. One of them recognized Jafar in due time during the battle, so their lives were spared.
“Lesson learned, I trust,” Sarek sneered at them as he made a point of having himself remove the diamonds from their pouches and pockets. He also used this search to lift every other coin and gemstone off their persons. As he finished rifling her wealth, though, Sarek was puzzled to find only 525 gp worth of diamonds.
The berserker member of Prime then brought forth Kaelen’s charred body and dumped it on the floor. When searched, Sarek found that the sorcerer’s corpse had 475 gp worth of diamonds on it. Amina gasped, realizing that with Kaelen’s greedy theft during their Long Rest that he had doomed himself. When this was voiced aloud by the cleric, Sarek became enraged. “I can understand all of you taking initiative, trying to win extra loot for yourself, and, as such, I was ready to forgive. But this one,” Qadi Sarek glared down at the corpse. “He knowingly took from his partners. That’s unforgivable.” Sarek then gestured for the handler caring for the leads binding his giant Sobek crocodile to pull the beast over. The Crew watched in horror then as the reptile tore apart and consumed their former friend.
Once the creature had finished, Sarek glared again at the others. “We won’t talk about it again.”
Following the loss of Kaelen, the four surviving members of the party spent several days lying low in the Central District, selling most everything they owned and taking on any minor municipal contracts they could find to recoup their losses and gather every available coin for long-overdue equipment upgrades. At first light, the group headed to the Grand Bazaar of Al-Zellah to attend the monthly public auction at the Velvet Auction House, where rare military imports and scavenged relics are occasionally put up for bid.
The session focused primarily on procurement and equipment upgrades across the market stalls before the main auction begin. Jafar won an enchanted set of +1 Leather Armor (1,400 gp). Wendle purchased a stash of Potions of Healing, specialized component pouches, and rare inks required for transcribing future rituals into his Book of Shadows under the patronage of Mýrkynna. Amina got a good deal on an armor maintenance kit, divine incense, and medical salves, restocking her supplies for future field combat. Zahra used teh gathering to sell off several of our her captured weapons and trophies to pool her resources so she could bid on a high-tier martial sidearm.
During the premier afternoon block, a +1 Longsword forged from ancient Tuataran steel was brought to the auction stage (expected market value of 1,000 gp). Zahra immediately opened the bidding. She quickly found herself locked in a spirited bidding war against a hooded face in the crowd. It turned out to be Rafi Al-Fasir, the Eldritch Knight they had previously teamed up with in the subterranean cisterns. Zahra pushed his bid to 1,100 gp, overbidding the item’s standard value. Rafi paused, glanced sheepishly at the formidable, snake-headed Yuan-ti Malison, and slowly shook his head, signaling to the auctioneer that he had to bow out. Zahra claimed the blade.
Later in the same auction, a rare, obsidian-inlaid +1 Shield came up for bid (it was announced that the expected market value was 1,500 gp). To the party’s astonishment, Rafi stepped back into the bidding arena and secured the shield uncontested at a bargain rate of 1,300 gp. Outside the auction hall, a puzzled Zahra approached Rafi, questioning how he could buy a 1,300 gp shield after not having enough to outbid her on the sword. Rafi chuckled, explaining that he considered himself a gentleman. Once he realized he was bidding directly against his new friend, he yielded the desired weapon to her out of courtesy.
Impressed by Rafi’s military discipline, humor, and tactical prowess, Zahra and Jafar invited the veteran soldier to join their ranks to fill the void left by Kaelen’s death. Rafi accepted, bringing with him his Soldier experience, heavy defensive armor, and abjuration and evocation magic to solidify their frontline alongside Zahra. Gathering over evening mint tea at a high-end bazaar courtyard, the five adventurers formally sealed their new partnership under Qadi Sarek’s banner, officially christening their reformed band “The New Crew.”
